Regulation
Regulation
- TV (and radio) is regulated by OFCOM
- OFCOM have a set of rules called the broadcasting code
- Harm and Offence
- Crime
- Religion ect...
Watershed
Ofcom also define the watershed – the period before 9pm and after 5.30am when programmes containing material unsuitable for children cannot be shown – this includes sexual content, violence, graphic or disturbing imagery and swearing. This means that programmes such as Cuffs have to be very careful about their content, which might be seen to reduce the realism of the programme as, for example, the criminals avoid swearing.
Questions
How might watershed impact on Cuffs? They cannot swear or show graphic violence for example, in a fight.
Define all four of Ofcom's PSB purposes and six PSB characteristics in a TV context?
Ofcom PSB purposes: Informing our understanding of the world, simulating knowledge and learning, reflecting the UK's cultural indentity, representing diversity and alternative viewpoints
PSB Characteristics: High quality, be original, innovative, challenging, widely available, distinctive
How does Cuffs show all four purposes and six characteristics?
Cuffs 'informs our understanding of the world' because you can see how the world has changed to accept people of other sexualities. It 'simulates knowledge' because viewers can see how to react in harmful scenarios.
What is TV Scheduling?
TV scheduling is the order or time a TV show comes out that maximises the view count. You have to think about the audience that is watching, e.g: This morning is mainly 'mums' watching, so the time they put it on is in the day around 10am
Why is scheduling crucial to the success of all broadcasters and shows?
Because if the show was on at the same time as another show that is more popular, people are more likely to watch the more popular one, therefore the first show won't get as many views
When was Cuffs scheduled?
Cuffs was on at Wednesday at 8pm
What were the reasons for scheduling at that time, on that day, on that channel?
It was the only day Eastenders wasn't on and they wanted similar views to it
What were Cuffs viewing figures?
2.5 million to 4.2 million
What are comfort viewing and appointment television?
Comfort viewing is a 'go to' TV program that people watch to feel calm and relaxed
Appointment television is when you make time to watch
Cuffs was cancelled as it is not either of these.
