How do social contexts influence media texts

How do social contexts influence media texts?

Women in 1960 were treated very unequally and unfairly. They were payed 60% less than men for doing the exact same jobs, and they were expected to work 'pink collar jobs.' Women  were also completely objectified. For example, in The Avengers,  Emma Peels bum was touched randomly. This shows that in a 1960's context, women were seen as sexual objects for men. The 1960 audience would have just viewed that as being normal and wouldn't think twice about it. However, if a modern audience were to watch this, they would view it as sexual assault and would expect the characters to address it.

In 1960, any form of homosexuality was illegal. Publicly gay people were sent to mental hospitals or prisons. In The Avengers, homosexuality is not mentioned at all. This is probably because if they were to mention or show it, most regular viewers would stop watching because of their hatred towards homosexual relationships. Because of the fact television neglected homosexuality, viewers may have subconciously thought it was wrong and unordinary.
