What is Television Funding?
The sources where television companies get their money from
What is the BBC's main source of funding and how does it work?
- 75% of the BBC’s funding comes from the licence fee (currently costs £147 for a colour and £49.50 for a black and white TV Licence. )
- The remaining income comes from commercial activities such as:
- Worldwide sales of its programmes
- Publications such as Radio Times, Top Gear (not anymore!), Good Food, etc
By selling its programmes to other broadcasting companies
What issues are there with the BBC's funding model?
- They do not advertise - part of the remit
- People have other platforms to watch programs on (subscription channels) - e.g: Netflix, amazon prime
What other methods are there for funding TV?
- Product placement (e.g: Coronation Street has put a Co-Op in the street
- Advertising
What problems are there with Commercial TV Funding?
- People might want to stop watching the channel as it's boring to wait through the adverts
- Television advertising is less effective than other forms of advertising so it is not 100% reliable that the channel will get adverts
