Mise-en-Scene

  • This is a french term meaning "in the scene or frame".
  • It's essentially everything in the shot that is not camera, sound or editing.
  • The elements of mise-en-scene are:
  1. Settings and props
  2. Facial expressions and body language
  3. Costume, hair and makeup
  4. Lighting and colour 
  5. Positioning of characters and objects in the frame

Colour Connotations

RED 
danger, romance, intimacy, blood, anger

BLUE
water, ocean, peace, calming, relaxing

YELLOW
kindness, warmth, sun, happy, childish

GREEN
nature, relaxation, vegan

BLACK
darkness, death, sadness, conflict, negativity

WHITE
angelic, calmness, relaxing, purity, happiness, heaven


Foreground

Objects or characters closest to the camera

Middleground

Objects or characters in the middle of the shot

Background

Objects or characters in the back of the shot

Focus pull

Where something in the foreground is in focus and the background is out of focus or vice-versa 

Deep focus

When everything in the shot is in focus
