- Genre is a french word meaning 'type'
- Genre's are made up of conventions (rules of the genre)
- Conventions of a horror film:
- Dark, gloomy lighting
- jump scares
- intense, high pitch music
- children
- desolate location
- blood
- screaming
- death
- creepy characters
Subverting
Going against genre or breaking normal conventions of the genre
Example: 'Get out' is a thriller because there is no main killer but is labelled as a horror because we react to it as a horror film - audience gets scared
Hybrid
When multiple, different genres mix together
Example: Scream Queens is a horror - comedy
Example: Life on Mars is a Science fiction - crime drama
